Tags & Segments
In this article, we will go through what "Tags" and "Segments" are inside Rule and how to set it up within the platform.
We will cover:
- What is the difference between tags and segments
- Create tag
- Create segment
What is the difference between tags and segments
Tag=List of subscribers. When you upload subscribers to your Rule account, you must put them in a tag. For example, when you download a file to your computer, you name it something appropriate to understand what the file contains, it's the same in Rule when you upload subscribers to your account and put them in a tag to categorize what type of list it is.
Segment=Further divide your customers. With segments, you start from the data/information you have on your customers and subscribers. It is usually customer data and information about your customers such as name, zip code, city, customer type, interest, etc. and these are referred to as custom fields.
Create tag
- Click on "Subscribers"
- Then on "Tags"
Then on "+ New tag" in the upper right corner
- Name your "Tag"
- Describe your "Tag", this is not mandatory, but we recommend doing it for clarity and structure in the account if, for example, there are multiple people using the account.
- Then you can import subscribers to the "Tag"
Create segment
In this example, we will show you how to create a segment to get the subscribers who have not opened the latest campaign!
- Click on "Subscribers"
- Then on "Segments"
Then on "+ New segment" in the upper right corner
- Name your "Segment"
- Describe what your segment should do, this is not mandatory, but we recommend doing it for clarity and structure if, for example, there are multiple people using the account.
- Choose which "Tags" this segment should be based on
- Choose "Regular segment" or "Combined segment", if you want to know the difference, you can read more about it here!
- "Create"
Now we will set up the rules for the segment!
- Choose if you want to match "All" or "Any". All=the segment retrieves the values that match all rules. Something=one or any rule must match the subscriber to end up in the segment.
- Choose a field, this is a dropdown menu with different options. In this case, we chose "Campaign"
- Choose which campaigns you want to segment on
- Choose "has/has not"
- Choose "Opened the email"
- Choose the number of days
- Here you can add more rules if you want
- Check if you want to include "Historical data" or not. In this case, we don't need it
- Click "Save and sync" when you're done!
